Women's football poised to take centre stage in Joburg on Women's Day

The build-up to the Gauteng Women’s football tournament finals reaches fever pitch this Women’s Day, with an array of talent from areas in and around Johannesburg expected to be showcased during the preliminary round of the competition at the Eldorado Sports Grounds on Saturday.

The tournament is organised by the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in partnership with the South African Football Association (SAFA).

Gauteng Sport MEC Molebatsi Bopape has expressed her commitment to reel in increased participation of women in sports and to groom more national and international stars through the department’s programmes.

“We would like to see more women take up opportunities that sport offers to empower their lives and to make a difference in their communities, the women’s football programme is one of the projects that I feel, working closely with Safa, will go a long way in reaching out to the talent and nurturing tomorrows national heroes,” Bopape said.

Now in its third year, the women’s football tournament has been commissioned to serve as a breeding ground for the female football stars of tomorrow by seeking out and providing a platform for upcoming women footballers to compete at a high level.

The teams participating include under-13, Under-15 and senior teams, this weekend’s event is the fourth of five preliminaries held in all the clusters of Gauteng. Excelling teams will book a place in the provincial finals to be held on the 23rd and 24th of this month (August).
