Women's caucus condemns gender based violence

MPL Koliswa Fihlani, Chairperson of the Women's Caucus in the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature condemns acts of violence against women and children in the Eastern Cape particularly in the former Transkei area. The Chairperson got shaken by the alarming rate of elderly women killings especially in Tholeni village and says these gruesome attacks on women are extremely worrying.

The increasing incidents of violence on women and children violate clauses in the South African Constitution’s Bill of Rights and are an insult to those who tirelessly fought for the liberation of our country.

Women and children should be afforded protection and respect in any society, yet sadly this is lacking as women are victimised and subjected to most painful experiences. The rights of women and children and their aspirations should be of paramount importance and we must not tolerate any act of gender-based violence that results in physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, says MPL Fihlani.

The continuation of these horrific incidents on women is an insult to our society at large as women across all corners of South Africa are currently celebrating Women’s Month and also creating awareness on gender based violence. The Women’s Caucus as a whole is in pains with the recent murders in our society as a result of these shameful attacks. We cannot tolerate this anymore; murders are continuously repeated despite government efforts to defeat this scourge, says MPL Fihlani.

The Chairperson is resolute that the Women’s Caucus is designed to provide much needed support to women and children and shall rope in all relevant stakeholders to team up against this cruelty. As part of the Provincial Women's Month activities, the Women’s Caucus shall visit the Toleni village under the theme “Addressing the Gender Based Violence”. The Women’s rights are human rights; let us say no to the violation of women’s rights.
