Winter school classes progressed without glitches

The Mpumalanga Department of Education is satisfied with the progress of the winter school classes from 21 June to date. These winter classes will end this Friday.

The winter school classes were coordinated in 113 centres with 35 000 learners having registered to participate.

The overall learner turnout was satisfactory with more than 90 percent learners attending the classes. Learners are scheduled to write a post test on Friday and the results will be given to the respective schools.

Schools will re-open on 13 July 2010 and the MEC for Education, Mrs Regina Mhaule is calling on all role players to utilise every second for the enhancement of education delivery.

"I call on all education stakeholders to make it an obligation to ensure that teaching and learning progresses unhindered. All parents are urged to create an enabling environment for their children to learn. This is prudent and remains a remedy for the enhancement of leaner performance."

In addition, the Dial a Tutor programme that was established to assist learners who experience study challenges when studying at home will operate from 18h00 to 20h00 from Monday to Thursday beginning on 12 July 2010.

This is intended to ensure that learners are given the required support in their studies.

Learners can dial the departmental toll free number 0800 203 116 to be linked with a curriculum specialist who will be able to guide them on the spot.

The department is encouraging all communities to urge learners to utilise this service.
