White Paper being revised

One of the pivotal documents guiding sport and recreation in South Africa, the well known White Paper on Sport and Recreation is currently undergoing a process of revision.

The process was recently taken forward at a workshop organised by Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) and attended by national and provincial sports leaders as well as SRSA senior management.

Discussions were based on a new draft White Paper prepared by SRSA's Directorate of Strategic Support that consisted of previous consultations.

The central issues covered by the updating are:

* To update changes in the macro-structures mentioned in the White Paper
* To include a national plan for sport in the White Paper
* To include a central and unified sport and recreation in the White Paper
* There is a need for new sport initiatives within a framework of greater cooperation
* To ensure synergy between the core documents that guide SRSA operations and the national plan for sport. Thus there should be continuity between the Case for Sport, the White Paper, and SRSA's strategic plan and business plans.

After the workshop inputs will be recorded and included in a second draft White Paper that will be submitted to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee for Sport and Recreation for discussion on 11 May, after which a second draft will be done.

After more public and stakeholder consultation the final draft of the White Paper will be submitted to Cabinet for ratification, after which it will become official and be implemented.
