The department has different categories geared towards providing houses to people in the province, such programmes, include low cost housing scheme for people with a monthly income of less than a R3 500 per month. Those who earn above this amount qualify for other schemes such as social rental housing scheme which accommodates people with a monthly income from R3 500 to R7 500 per month.
In an effort to close this gap the department has granted funding to social housing companies to build rental housing units in Nelson Mandela Metro and Buffalo City earmarked to provide decent affordable rental homes to hundreds of low and middle income workers.
This is part of a departmental social housing programme responsible for integration of communities, socially, economically and structurally. Recently the state president launched and handed over housing units to Emerald Sky a social housing project that accommodates all races who meet the required income per month (R3 500 to R7 500).
Three other projects are under construction in Nelson Mandela Metro and Buffalo City Municipalities. Of these two in Buffalo City are about to be completed. White families who qualify on these programmes must contact the responsible social housing companies for applications and those who earn less than R3 500 per month must apply through their local municipalities for low cost housing assistance.
These rental housing units accommodate people with an income between R3 500 to R7 500 per month. These units are in close proximity to the city, malls, health facilities and other social amenities and work-place. The rental units are in Nelson Mandela Metro (Park Towers, 176 units) Buffalo City (Emerald Sky project 176, Southernwood 249, Reservoir Mews 429).
The department in consultation with municipalities is identifying land which will be set aside for piloting of the community Residential units in Nelson Mandela Metro, Lukhanji, Kouga, Camdeboo, King Sabata Dalindyebo and Intsika Yethu Municipalities.
The community residential units is a new programme aimed at providing secure rental tenure for lower income groups (persons with an income between R800 to R3 500 per month. White families are also not excluded from this programme.
