Anton Bredell, Western Cape Minister for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, said today that weather conditions across the Western Cape are beginning to stabilise following several days of severe rainfall in the Central Karoo and Garden Route districts. However, residents are urged to remain cautious, as large volumes of water continue to move through river systems across the province.
One fatality has been confirmed in the Garden Route after an individual attempted to cross a flooded river. Authorities have again appealed to residents not to cross flooded rivers or roads, warning that these conditions remain extremely dangerous.
At today’s Joint Operations Centre (JOC) briefing, officials confirmed that the worst of the weather system has passed, with conditions clearing across most affected regions. Current forecasts indicate a return to more typical winter rainfall patterns over the coming days and weeks.
Despite the improving weather, significant volumes of water remain in dams and river systems, particularly in the Garden Route and Central Karoo. Several dams remain above capacity and continue to release water downstream, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.
Emergency services remain fully activated across the province. Humanitarian assistance, including food, water and shelter, is being provided to affected communities. Infrastructure teams continue to restore access to areas that were temporarily cut off, while electricity supply has been stabilised in previously affected areas.
The Western Cape Government also reiterated that public communication efforts remain ongoing across multiple platforms to ensure communities receive timely and accurate safety information.
