Western Cape Transport and Public Works on winning major engineering award 

The Department of Transport and Public Works wins yet another major engineering award 

On Wednesday evening, the Western Cape Department of Transport & Public Works, took home the coveted 2022 Visionary Client of the Year at the 50th Consulting Engineers South Africa (CESA) Aon Engineering Excellence Awards in Sandton, Gauteng. 

According to CESA “a visionary client creates environments which are conducive for engineers to improve lives and livelihoods and have the courage and conviction to tackle the most complex projects.” 

The Roads Branch was recognised as a prime example of a government department that follows the key commitments of its service delivery charter, and for helping communities and industries stay connected to goods, labour and services through targeted road network investments that promotes economic activity.

“The CESA Aon Visionary Client of the Year award confirms that we are on the right track in creating lives that people truly value through our projects and programmes. This is in line with our departmental vision of Creating Enabled Communities Leading Dignified Lives” says Jacqui Gooch, Head of Department. 

“The award not only recognises that we are leaders in infrastructure, but that we prioritise service delivery, and create economic and skills development opportunities,” said Tertuis Simmers, Provincial Minister of Infrastructure. 

The awards recognise the excellence in engineering of CESA members and the valuable work they do for their clients and society.  

Entries were judged on the following criteria:

  • Quality of engineering design
  • Ingenuity, originality and innovation
  • Management of planning and technical design
  • Aesthetics of engineering elements
  • Budgetary compliance
  • Unusual construction methods
  • Influence of consulting engineer on conceptual design
  • Complexity and sophistication
  • Responsibility carried by consulting engineer (risk)
  • Environmental, social and economic sustainability
  • Responsiveness to needs of client and community
  • Meeting the client’s deadlines for readiness
  • Logistics – (only relevant for International Projects)
