Western Cape businesses propose solutions to reduce red tape
A dedicated helpline dealing with event permit queries and an electronic application system are some of the proposals received as part of the Red Tape Reduction’s Biz Challenge.
The Western Cape Government’s Red Tape Reduction Unit launched the first phase of its Biz Challenge last month focused on streamlining the application process for events permits.
Alan Winde, MEC of Economic Opportunities, said events were important economic generators, contributing over R1 billion to the province’s economy each year.
“I have been encouraged by the response to the first round of the Biz Challenge. We have received comments from over 50 businesses, including major event organisers, consultants and law firms.”
Comments came from businesses across the Western Cape, from areas such as the Cape Metro, the Cape Winelands, the Karoo, West Coast, Eden and the Overberg.
The proposals included:
- A “how to” guide for event permitting and licence processes to be published on a municipality’s website. The City of Cape Town has this in place;
- A dedicated helpline to deal with enquiries on the application process for event permits and licences;
- The implementation of an electronic mechanism for submission of applications;
- A tracking system to monitor the status of electronically submitted applications.
“The Red Tape Reduction Unit will now interrogate all the comments. Workable solutions will be compiled into a report which will be presented to stakeholders. My goal is to see the best proposals adopted as soon as possible. We’ll work together to ensure it becomes easier to get an events licence or permit,” said MEC Winde.
MEC Winde said the Biz Challenge was designed to resolve blockages which could hinder economic growth.
“In September, the Biz Challenge will call for comments on visa regulations and tourism signage.
“Reducing red tape in key areas of concern for business will clear the way for economic growth and job creation.”
