Mobility Month: Western Cape calls on e-hailing and metered taxi operators to register and have their say

As part of October Mobility Month, the Western Cape Mobility Department is calling on all valid e-hailing and metered taxi operating licence holders to register to vote and nominate candidates in the first election of the new E-hailing and Metered Taxi Council – Western Cape (EMTC-WC). Registration and nominations are open until 22 October 2026.

The election will establish the first representative leadership structure for an industry that now has approximately 3,500 operators across the Western Cape, providing a collective platform for operators to engage on matters affecting their businesses and the sector.

The EMTC-WC aims to provide a credible, inclusive and accountable voice for the industry, including operators in both metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas. It will create a structured platform for engagement on issues such as licensing and compliance, operating conditions, platform-related concerns and other matters affecting operators.

“Mobility Month is about recognising the many people and services that keep our province moving. E-hailing and metered taxi operators form an important part of that system, and it is important that they have a credible and representative voice. We encourage every eligible operator to register, participate and vote, and to play a role in shaping the future representation of the industry” said Muneera Allie, Western Cape Mobility Department’s Head of Communication.

The Mobility Department is facilitating the process, not directing it. Its role is to support registration, verify operating licence information and coordinate the election process. The Department will not select candidates, campaign for individuals or influence the election outcome.

Valid operating licence holders can register online or at designated Department offices in Athlone, Cape Town and George.

Visit the Department’s webpage for more information on the EMTC-WC.
