Western Cape MEC for Transport Robin Carlisle on the deteriorating public transport in the Greater Cape Town area

Metrorail and Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) management have advised me of severe problems they are experiencing in respect of the vandalism and sabotage of their assets.

Whilst they and the police are taking steps to handle the situation, the Metro economy cannot afford the losses being incurred, no more than commuters can continue to put up with the delays currently being experienced.

Accordingly, I have requested the City of Cape Town, as the future custodians of regional public transport, to convene a meeting of the transport and security communities to consider joint actions to mitigate the existing situation.

The meeting will take place tomorrow under the Chairmanship of Mr Mike Marsden, Deputy City Manager, and will include, inter alia, representatives of Metrorail, GABS, SANTACO, My Citi, the police, the Metro law enforcement agencies and the Province.
