The Department of Labour’s (DoL) Director-General (DG), Nkosinathi Nhleko embarked on the second leg of Project Shanduka which kicked off in the Western Cape province. Through the project the DG aims to visit all provinces to provide feedback to Department of Labour (DoL) staff on the status of the initiative.
Project Shanduka is a key strategic project of the Department of Labour and focuses on the repositioning of the department as it strives for better and improved service delivery.
Opening the second phase of the project, Deputy Director-General: Corporate Services, Ms Lerato Molebatsi, gave an account of how the project came about, noting that there were a number of challenges and shortcoming which needed to be addressed.
The delegation’s visit sought to bring staff up to speed with the progress that had been made through Project Shanduka, and also to solicit some feedback from the colleagues in terms of any questions or clarities.
Visiting Cape Town and George areas, DoL staff came prepared with both their concerns and praises for Project Shanduka which they highlighted after the DG’s presentation.
From the issues which came out strongly on both occasions, were the need for “tools of trade”, in order to adequately perform duties. In addition, staff was concerned about whether or not their positions would be made redundant after the job evaluations took place. The DG and his entourage thereby emphasised their commitment that “no job losses”, still remains a key message throughout the process.
Staff members also had their share of recommendations to improve working conditions, which included the establishment of forums, where issues and challenges could be formally raised; others included improvement of people management skills, as well as the need to improve staff morale.
Through a practical exercise, staff members were encouraged to give their insights as to how Project Shanduka should continue, one of them included, “Project Shanduka must continue just as it is, it is long overdue!” As part of the roadshow, the delegation will travel to the Eastern Cape areas of Port Elizabeth and East London.
