Western Cape Education on Spelling Bee competition

The Western Cape Education Department hosted the annual Provincial Final of the Spelling Bee on Saturday 19th September 2015.

A total of 39 learners participated. This consisted of 15 Growsmart Spelling Bee finalists and 24 finalists from the District competitions, comprising the top 3 in each of the 8 Districts.

All schools were invited to participate. Each school selected a team of three learners from the Intermediate phase (Grade 4-6) to represent their school and over a number of months they competed against each other on stage before an audience.

The learners were required to spell words from the Oxford Concise Dictionary. They could ask for a definition and/ or the word to be used in a sentence.

I am pleased to announce the Western Cape’s most proficient spellers as;

  • First Place – Erin Sloan from Greenfield Girls Primary School
  • Second Place - Trace-lee Cloete from Dennegeur Primary School
  • Third Place - Onwa Khonzani from St Mary's Primary School

These three outstanding and proficient spellers will now represent the Western Cape Province at the National Spelling Bee in Pretoria on 10th October 2015.

The standard was extremely high, so these three can be very proud of their performance.

I wish them all the very best of luck at the Finals. I know they will make the Western Cape proud.
