Western Cape celebrates the opening of its 8th school this year

In 2009, Minister Grant met with community members from Westlake who stressed the need for a new primary school in the area. There had been substantial growth in Westlake over the last decade and proposals for a new school dated back as far as 2002.

A baseline audit at the end of 2009 to ascertain where we should target our future infrastructure interventions confirmed the need for a primary school in Westlake. In 2010 the WCED announced its infrastructure plan which included the building of 20 new schools, 25 replacement schools and additional classrooms in the province over a 3 year period.

Westlake Primary was earmarked as one of the 20 new schools and the WCED made an undertaking to investigate the different options available to us so that we could get this process moving as swiftly and as fast as possible.

Construction on the new Westlake Primary school began in April 2010. The school cost R22 Million and was completed in April 2011. It can accommodate 600 learners and has 14 classrooms, 2 specialist rooms and 1 computer lab, 1 library, complete admin block and school hall.

Westlake Primary is the 8th new school to be completed this year.

Eleven additional schools are currently under construction and a further 12 are in planning stages.

Next week, we will be announcing the new schools to be opened at the beginning of the 2012 school year.
