North West MEC for Human Settlements, Desbo Mohono, said her province could learn a lot from Brazil with regard to innovative housing construction technology. She was speaking today after a successful mission to Brazil last week.
Mohono and acting Head of Department, Johnny Motlogelwa, went on a two days trip to Brazil as part of the department’s agenda to speed up housing delivery in the province.
The North West delegation went to Brazil to study the new housing construction technology which assisted Brazil to resolve its housing challenges within a very short space of time. The technology involves steel and cement as major components of construction. Instead of using bricks, cement is used with steel as the holding infrastructure. Among the opportunities and benefits presented by this technology are that it is affordable, delivers faster and is reliable, is labour intensive and thus will create more job opportunities.
During her visit in Brazil, Mohono and her delegation explored the feasibility and viability of this technology for the North West. Currently the North West is faced with the challenge of providing quality houses and to accelerate the pace of delivery in order to address the current housing backlog.
While in Brazil, the MEC’s delegation inspected houses that were built using this technology. They also interacted with relevant stakeholders and beneficiaries of the project with a view to understanding the impact of the new housing technology and the contribution it had made to the housing programme of the Brazilian government.
MEC Mohono and Motlogelwa indicated that the Brazilian technology is worth exploring further.
