Northern Cape water storage reservoirs are holding steady and have remained unchanged this week at 104.7%. This was revealed by the latest weekly State of Reservoirs report released by the Department of Water and Sanitation.
The two main river water supply systems in the province, are also at satisfactory levels sitting comfortably over 100% with the Vaal recording 101.6% and the Orange at 100.6%.
The Vanderkloof Dam situated approximately 130 km downstream from Gariep Dam at the border of the Free State and Northern Cape has marginally decreased from 101.9% to 100.2%.
Water storage in some of the dams and weirs in the province are as follows:
Spitskop Dam located in Harts River at Jankempdorp decreased from last week’s 107.6% to’106.2%.
Vaalharts Weir in Warrenton area increased to 84.8% from last week’s 83.7%.
Douglas Weir has slightly increased to 117.3 from last weeks’ 115.8%.
Karee Dam which feeds Calvinia and the surrounding areas, is holding steadily at 99.4%.
Kindly take note that the dams/weirs reflected above are not for long term water storage, but they serve as balancing dams designed to act as a multi-purpose facility. They also serve as distribution points from where water is diverted into pipelines, canals or power generating turbines.
The Department of Water and Sanitation calls on all water users in the province to be prudent with water and use it sparingly.
