Water supply disruptions in Lekwa Local Municipality – 7 December 2014
The communities of Standerton and surrounding areas in Lekwa Local Municipality will experience water supply disruptions due to a planned shutdown on Sunday, 07 December 2014. The shutdown will take place from 6h00 to 18h00.
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) is mandated to ensure security of water supply for all facets of the lives and livelihoods of South Africans. Part of this mandate includes regular, planned maintenance of its infrastructure throughout the length and breadth of the land.
The department is implementing a refurbishment project in the Standerton Water Treatment Works to improve the water quality and quantity of the plant. The intervention came as a result of the challenges experienced by the Lekwa Local Municipality in terms of water quality and quantity.
The project is nearing completion and the shutdown is necessary to ensure the installation of backwash pumps which require 10 hours to complete. The work set for Sunday includes the disconnecting, dismantling and removing of the old backwash pump from the floor level and then assembling and connecting the new pump.
The areas that will be affected by the planned shutdown include:
- Standerton town
- Meyerville
- Central town
- Cosmos Park
- Flora Park
- Industrial Park
- Azalea
- Sakhile township and extensions
- Stan West and
- Bulk water consumers in town
The department and all stakeholders request patience and cooperation from all who are affected. Please consider everyone in the supply system; make storage preparations if possible and use available water sparingly and optimally.
The department apologises for the inconvenience caused. This planned outage is however important for maintenance and sustainability of the infrastructure and water supply.
