Water and Sanitation on water situation in Western Cape

The winter rainfall arrived late in the Western Cape. The first good rain has increased the major dam levels by an average of 2.5%.

The drought in the Ladismith-Calitzdorp district has been broken and restrictions have been lifted.

There are currently water restrictions applicable in Clanwilliam and Vredendal. Although the rainfall has led to a reduction in water demand, the Department of Water and Sanitation, in conjunction with the Municipalities, Water Boards and other role players are imposing maximum water restrictions within the areas affected.

Except for the above, there are currently no other water restrictions in place in the Western Cape. The normal water savings measures are still applicable and encouraged.

The utilisations of the dams are mainly:

1. Theewaterskloof Dam – Cape Town municipal water supply and irrigation.
2. Bergriver Dam - Cape Town municipal water supply and irrigation.
3. Voëlvlei Dam – Cape Town municipal water supply and irrigation.
4. Wemmershoek Dam - Cape Town municipal water supply and irrigation.
5. Brandvlei Dam – Irrigation
6. Leeu-Gamka Dam – Irrigation
7. Stompdrift Dam – Irrigation
8. Floriskraal Dam – Irrigation
