Water and Sanitation on War on Leaks training programme

Young people gearing up to fix water leaks

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) met with members of its Technical Steering Committee in King William’s Town yesterday to share progress and challenges on War on Leaks (WoL).

The War on leaks Programme is a department’s initiative to fight water loss in our communities through leaks. Young men and women are recruited and trained in the programme to fix tap water and pipe leaks. They are trained in a number of disciplines, namely electrical, fitter & turner, welding, plumbing, water agents and instrumentation.

The first phase of the programme was launched in August 2015 in Port Elizabeth where 3000 young youths were recruited nationally. Out of the figure, 261 are from the Eastern Cape. Over 50% of those recruits are water agents and just less that 50% are artisans in the respective disciplines. Thus far, 112 water agents have been placed at municipalities and host companies. A total of 57 artisans have also been placed to commence with fixing water leaks in municipalities and host companies.

The letters of commitment have been signed by some municipalities as well as a memorandum of understanding in progress.
