Water and Sanitation urges water conservation

DWS urges water conservation despite minimal increase in water levels

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) acknowledges the slight improvement in water levels in the Eastern Cape Province due to recent rainfall. However, it is crucial to emphasise that even with this increase, using water sparingly remains essential. Many areas still face inconsistent dam levels, highlighting the ongoing need for careful water conservation.

The province's overall water levels have risen slightly to 83.5% this week, up from 82.4% last week, this is according to the recent weekly status update on dam levels issued by the Department.

The Amathole Water Supply System, which serves the Amathole District Municipality and Buffalo City Metro, saw an increase from 102.2% to 104.6%. Specific improvements include Nahoon Dam (from 99.9% to 100.7%), Bridle Drift Dam (from 104.4% to 108.4%), and Laing Dam (from 100.5% to 105.5%).

However, the Algoa Water Supply System (AWSS) experienced a decline from 73.8% to 73.3%, with Kouga Dam dropping from 82.4% to 81.3%, Loerie Dam from 88.0% to 86.3%, and Impofu Dam remaining critically low at 55.5%.

The Klipplaat Water Supply System, which supplies the Chris Hani District, showed a minor improvement from 90.2% to 90.6%. Fortunately, Macubeni Dam, Xonxa Dam, and Tsojana Dam remain at full capacity (100% each), ensuring stable supply in these areas.

While some reservoirs are at sufficient levels, others remain precariously low, underscoring the urgent need for water conservation. Every drop counts, and communities must remain vigilant in using water responsibly. DWS urges all residents to adopt water-saving habits, such as limiting unnecessary water use, fixing leaks promptly, and reporting water wastage.
Residents are also encouraged to report any leaks or water-related concerns to their nearest municipal offices or call the departmental toll-free number 082 200 200.
