Water and Sanitation urges users to continue using water sparingly

All to continue with water saving initiatives

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) in the Western Cape calls upon all water users to use water sparingly as it has seen an over 1-2 % week on week decrease of dam levels. The hydrological report of 09 May 2022 suggests an over 2% decline of the Western Cape Water Supply System which consists of the 6 (six) dams, including the largest in the Western Cape, the Theewaterskloof Dam. The WCWSS is currently at 66,05%, a notable decline from 68, 35% from this time last year

The Theewaterskloof Dam is at 67,90 as compared to 72,11 at the same time last year. This is a satisfactory outlook given that the winter is on the doorstep with the possibility of high inflows.

Flooriskraal and Stompdrift are the only dams that have seen a decrease of more than 5% this week.

Gamka Dam in the Central Karoo has been hovering above 90% in the last few weeks, a remarkable recovery as compared to 49,91% of a year ago. The Misverstand Dam on the West Coast is overflowing at 100,85%

DWS appeals to all water users in particular the high-end water users to use water sparingly during and beyond the rainy season. The following are some of the water-saving tips to be practiced:

  • Car washes to use buckets instead of hosepipes to save water
  • Gardens must be watered during early morning and late afternoon
  • Recycle water in the household
  • Those with rain harvesting tanks are encouraged to harvest rainwater

Meanwhile, DWS Western Cape is deeply concerned about persistent vandalism of sewer infrastructure in and around Cape Town. DWS supports the call of the City in urging anyone with information about these incidents to please report this urgently so it can be investigated and the culprits held accountable for their actions.
