Water and Sanitation on stability of Western Cape dam storage systems

Western Cape dam storage systems stable

The National Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) wishes to update citizens about the Western Cape Water Situation.

The Western Cape Water Supply System (WCWSS), comprising of 6 largest dams supplying water to the City of Cape Town and surroundings, is hovering slightly above 100% according to the hydrological report of Monday, 07 August 2023. This is a significant improvement from the same time last year when the system hovered slightly above 75%.

The Western Cape State of Dams, which combines all dams in the Western Cape Province, is now 91%, a remarkable increase compared to 28,12% in 2017 when the City of Cape Town experienced the worst drought in memory.

There has been a steady healthy yield in the Olifants-Doorn covering the West Coast, with Clanwilliam Dam hovering above 90% for the past five weeks.

On individual dams, DWS Western Cape Provincial Head, Ms Ntombizanele Bila-Mupariwa said it was pleasing to see Theewaterskloof, which accounts for 54% of the province's water supply, overflow at over 100%.

Meanwhile, the management of DWS Western Cape wishes all women in the water and sanitation sector a blessed Women's Month.
