Water and Sanitation on Setlagole water project

Setlagole water woes to be addressed through R70 Million water project

Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), working together with the Ngaka Modiri District Municipality and Sedibeng water board roll out a R70 million bulk water supply project.

This projects aims to address lack of water supply in Setlagole area, under Ratlou Local Municipality.

The roll out of the project will see the entire Setlagole community and adjacent villages benefiting from the scheme which is planned to be completed in December 2016.

Currently, some of the areas are located beyond the 200 meter walking distance from the nearest communal standpipe and this means that some households are still serviced below the basic service level of water supply. The new project is bridging this gap.

Historically the area of Setlagole has had water shortages and to an extent relies on ground water source in the form of boreholes. The challenge experienced by the communities with this sort of supply is that some boreholes have very low yield of less than 0.5 litres per second.

As a result of these challenges, the Department of Water and Sanitation, Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality, Sedibeng water board and Ratlou local Municipality, have appointed the Department of Water and Sanitation Construction unit to fast track the implementation of the Setlagole bulk water supply project.

The project will ensure reliable bulk water supply, bulk storage and tie up with the internal reticulation which is implemented by Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality. The DWS construction unit is on site, constructing the 5.5 Mega liter reservoir which is 15 % complete to date.

The local community members are actively involved in this project and have been given job opportunities. Once the project is completed, water supply will increase to 30 liters per person per day which is above the basic standard.

An amount of R12 million is reserved for internal reticulation and communal standpipes in Setlagole area. Areas which will benefit from Phase 1a of the project include under Setlagole cluster include  Notingham, Pappiesvlakte, Setlagole, Setlhwatlhwe, Sweipa and Thutlwane. The new reservoir is constructed at the existing small reservoir site in Thutlwane.
