Water and Sanitation on repairs to the Churchill pipeline

The Department of Water & Sanitation together with the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro hereby wishes to inform the public on the repairs that are currently underway to the Churchill Pipeline (MAITLANDS PIPE CROSSING). The initial maintenance that was to have been during the period of 18 – 20 May had to be abandoned due to faulty valves, a matter that was unplanned for. These have now been repaired and thus the repair work is allowed to go ahead.

The Churchill repair programme will be as follows:

  • Monday 1 June: the day involved the isolation of the 1125 mm diameter pipe as well as the draining of the pipe via the scour valves;
  • Tuesday 2 June: inspection of the seal, cleaning, preparation and installation of the seal (this will take approximately eight hours); this will be followed by the refilling of the pipe and opening of the isolating valves;
  • Wednesday 3 June: the system will start filling and this process is expected to take about 48 hours for the whole system to fill and return to normal operation;

The Churchill pipeline system supplies 30% of the water to the NMBM. With parts of this now being worked on it is expected that there will be an effect on the supply to the whole NMBM.

The anticipated areas that could experience water interruptions during this period include: Blue Horizon bay, Seaview and Kini Bay.

All citizens within the affected areas must please assist in using water sparingly as over use could cause interruptions in other supply areas if reservoirs were to run dry.
