Water and Sanitation on reconstruction of Mpumalanga Popenyana canal

DWS reconstruct Mpumalanga Popenyana canal to improve service

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has recently completed rebuilding the Popenyana canal outflow sections after they collapsed due to heavy rains and soil erosion.

Popenyana Canal is located in the Usutu River area office, Mpumalanga Province. The department commenced the rebuilding of the outlet structure project in February 2016.

Canals are man-made concrete lined channels that pump water to station and dams including industries such as Eskom who generate electricity.

Canals pose a safety risk particularly for children especially during the pumping periods. The public is not allowed to use canals for recreational purposes such as swimming, playing or fishing because of the risks that are involved.

The department is therefore urging residents who reside near the canals to adhere to all the precautionary notices and not to vandalise the protective fence around the canals for their own safety.

To deliver on its core mandate of providing basic services to the public, the department is involved in a number of infrastructure projects that are currently taking place in various canals.
