Water and Sanitation on raising awareness about good hygiene to Mossel Bay residents

Department of Water and Sanitation encourages good hygiene

Today, 13 October 2022, the National Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), the Mossel Bay Municipality, private partners and volunteers took over the streets of Asla Park in Mossel Bay to raise awareness about the importance of washing hands to curb communicable diseases and how to save water.

The campaign was part of the celebrations towards the Global Handwashing Day which is celebrated on the 15th of October every year.

Global Handwashing Day (GHD) is a global advocacy initiative dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of hand hygiene and it teaches the six basic steps of washing hands and the importance of using soap or sanitiser.

According to the Deputy Director: Water and Sanitation at DWS, Mr Jacob Ngo, the department chose Asla Park as the area has a high prevalence of diarrhoea cases.

“While we raise awareness about handwashing, we are also spreading the importance of saving water,” said Mr Ngo.

Part of the team that took to the streets were plumbers from the municipality who checked leaks inside and outside the homes and where leaks were found, they were closed immediately to stop water losses.
