Water and Sanitation on President Jacob Zuma’s commitment to Giyani residents

Minister Nomvula Mokonyane’s oral response in Parliament regarding the President’s commitment to Giyani residents

All pronouncements on service delivery by the President receive the required serious attention by the Ministry and Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS). As such the pronouncements emanating from the previous visit by the President to Giyani resulted in the following specific actions to be followed up by the DWS.

There is a need to transfer water from the Nandoni Dam to the recently expanded Nsami Water Treatment Works. This need arises from the prolonged drought in the area in 2010 that negatively affected the Middle Letaba and Nsami Dams. This also implied that the transfer canal from the Middle Letaba Dam could not operate optimally.

The DWS has recently conducted the necessary pre-feasibility assessment report. This pre-feasibility report or technical investigation recommended two processes that needed to be implemented to assist the situation in Giyani.

The first recommendation is that the Nandoni Water treatment Works be upgraded to a capacity of more than 120 Ml per day. This capacity will align it to the required water demand for Giyani. This action will reduce the growing pressure on Nsami Dam and potable water can thus be pumped through a dedicated pipeline to the command reservoir in Giyani to supply villages in the Mopani District Municipality.

The second recommendation speaks to the need for another pipeline to be constructed from the Nandoni Treatment Works. This pipeline will then service communities between Nandoni and Malamulele that currently do not have access to potable water.

This is an indication of the work that is currently underway to bring the pronouncements of the President to the communities of Giyani to life.
