Water and Sanitation on pollution in Modimolle

The Department of Water and Sanitation’s (DWS) Compliance, Monitoring and Enforcement (CME) Unit has been dispatched to Modimolle, in Limpopo from yesterday. The team was dispatched there due to an incident relating to pollution of the Nyl River in the area. The pollution was as a result of a truck transporting sulphuric acid overturning in the city centre and the spillage impacting on the water course.

As a result of the spillage and pollution, the fauna and flora within the water course has been negatively affected. The DWS’ CME Unit is on site and has been since the DWS received notice of the spillage on Monday afternoon. The Compliance Unit has set up a disaster team in the town which will be looking into the matter progressively.

The pollution has as such been contained whilst further investigations into the disaster are underway.

A progress report will be tabled at a meeting later today (Tuesday 19th), and the media and community will be advised accordingly.
