Water and Sanitation on National Water Week

Brace yourself for exciting and informative DWS National Water Week events

The month of March each year is declared Water Month, but the real celebrations of having access to this life-giving resource, National Water Week (NWW), kicks off at the weekend.

The seven-day event officially kicks off on Sunday, 18 March 2018 and will end the following weekend.

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has lined-up several activities which will be shared with various stakeholders and people involved in the water sector throughout the country.

To kick-start the NWW, an event tomorrow, Saturday at Alexandra Township in collaboration with the City of Johannesburg to clean parts of the Jukskei River.

This will be on Saturday, 17 March 2018.

The event titled A Re Sebetseng River Clean-up will see the DWS and the City of Johannesburg rolling up their sleeves to conduct a clean-up of the Juskei River as part of the National Water Month Activities. The Jukskei is part of the DNA of Alexandra Township.

The process is viewed as a Public Education Programme to create awareness about the importance of water, the resources conservation including spreading this message to those people who are not in the know regarding water safety tips, especially during this testing period of the scarcity of water due to drought.

Close to 500 community members of Alexandra and water stakeholders are expected to attend the event and assist in the cleanup.

On Tuesday, 20 March 2018, attention will be focused at the drought-ravaged Cape Town in the Western Cape where the department will be engaging local businessmen to solicit their support in helping to tackle the problem.

This process is billed as The role of Business Towards Active Citizenry in Saving Water.

The event is organised by DWS together with Operation SA and Miss Earth South Africa.

Between the 22 to 23 March 2018 the department will engage Diplomats of various states who are based here in the country. This will be through a World Water Day Briefing with Diplomats

The event is scheduled to take place on 22 March 2018 when there will be a discussion and briefing session with diplomats to discuss interventions on drought, floods and water pollution. On 23 March the diplomats will be taken on excursions at some of the DWS infrastructures in the Western Cape. 

On Thursday, 22 March 2018 DWS in partnership with the Waterberg District Municipality in Limpopo will engage in a series of water saving activations to celebrate World Water Day. The district municipality has been adversely affected by the drought.

Still on this day, DWS will join Liquid Gold for the launch of the Evolution Sanitation Centre. There are also other regional events organised by DWS’s Provincial Offices all over the country.
