Mpumalanga water levels stable but water users urged to use water sparingly

Water levels in Mpumalanga province are in a stable state but Department of Water and Sanitation has urged all water users in the province to use water sparingly.

The latest Department of Water and Sanitation weekly state of reservoirs report of 09 October 2023 shows that the average water levels in the listed dams in the Mpumalanga Province recorded a further drop from last week’s 93.4% to 92.8% which is still better than the 90.3% recorded during the same period last year. Water levels also continue to drop in the water management areas (WMA) as the Olifants WMA dropped from 86.4% to 85.8% and the Inkomati-Usuthu WMA dropped from 94.1% to 93.6%.

Water levels also dropped per district, with Ehlanzeni dropping from 95.5% to 94.6%, Gert Sibande dropped from 90.1% to 89.6% and Nkangala dropped from 97.0% to 96.5%.

Most of the listed dams in the Lowveld and Ehlanzeni District dropped in water levels, with only Primkop and Da Gama dams remaining unchanged at 100.4% and 94.1% respectively.

Dams that recorded declines in water levels include Blyderivierpoort dropping from 93.3% to 91.5%, Buffelskloof dropping from 89.5% to 87.8%, Driekoppies from 98.0% to 97.9%, Longmere from 92.8% to 89.7%, Klipkopjes from 100.0% to 99.8%, Witklip from 98.9% to 98.3%, Kwena from 92.1% to 90.2%, Inyaka from 98.2% to 97.7% and Ohrigstad from 68.9% to 68.4%.

Westoe is the only listed dams that remained unchanged in the Gert Sibande District, recording 58.0% with the rest recording declines in water volumes.

Declining in water levels, Grootdraai dropped from 84.6% to 83.4%, Nooitgedacht from 84.8% to 83.4%, Vygeboom from 100.7% to 100.4%, Jericho from 77.0% to 76.5%, Morgenstond from 97.9% to 97.7% and Heyshope from 97.8% to 97.7%.

In the Nkangala District, the majority of the listed dams recorded declines in water levels with only Middelburg Dam recording a slight improvement from 92.5% to 92.7%. The dams that recorded declines in water levels include Witbank Dam from 94.2% to 93.8%, Loskop Dam from 97.7% to 96.9% and Rhenosterkop / Mkhombo Dam from 98.4% to 98.2%.
