Water and Sanitation on KwaZulu-Natal weekly dam levels

KwaZulu-Natal dam levels steady week on week

KwaZulu-Natal dam levels continue to sit in a healthy condition week after week. This is despite the almost one percent provincial average decrease.

This week the provincial levels marginally dropped to 87,9% from last week's 88,2%. However, this is a vast improvement compared to the previous year's 67,2%.

The province's main water supply system, Umgeni Water Supply System, dropped slightly, landing at 97,0% from 98,4% last week.

Most of the dams in the province are either at capacity or inching towards the 100% mark, having remained unchanged from last week.

Driel Barrage, Woodstock dam and Inanda dam are at capacity, standing at 100,0%, 100,2% and 101,4%, respectively.

Craige Burn also remains unchanged at a healthy 100,4%.

Inching towards the brim is Wagendrift Dam at 99,7%, while Spioenkop jumped by 2% from last week's 98,9% to 100,2% this week.

The department's spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau, says the department is keeping a close eye on two dams that are of concern.

"Hazelmere Dam is a worry for us as it is currently below 50% at 48,4% while Mearns dam is at the halfway mark, which is 58.7%. This is a significant jump from last week's 54,4%," Ratau explained.

"The increase to almost 60% is welcome, however, we will be keeping an eye on both dams to ensure that levels remain steady."

"We continue our call to residents to use water sparingly. The dams may be at healthy levels, but we are still a water-scarce country and need to remain conscious of this fact," Ratau concluded.
