Water and Sanitation on KwaZulu-Natal steady dam levels

Following a downward spiral in the last few weeks, KwaZulu-Natal dam levels remain steady this week at 84,2%.

Meanwhile, the province's main water supply system, Umgeni Water Supply System, showed a slight improvement to land at 94,9% from last week's 94,0%.

The dams fed by the Mngeni River showed significant improvement this week with the Nagle Dam continuing with its upward trend to land at 95,9% from 88,0% last week.

It is followed by Midmar, Spring Grove and Inanda dams which are sitting at 93,4% from 92,2%, 91,6% from 89,3% and 101,1% from 100,9%, respectively.

Craigie Burn also showed significant improvement this week from 94,5% last week to 96,2%.

Ntshingwayo Dam is the only dam showing a decline, as it dipped by 3% to sit at 70,0% from 73,0% last week.

The rest of the dams remained steady this week.

Mearns Dam, a previous sore point for the department and the province, is out of the red at 101,4% capacity this week. In the past few weeks, it jumped from just above 50% to 104,0% last week.

Hazelmere Dam, however, is still below 50%, though this is impacted upon by the on-going work to raise the dam wall.

The department's spokesperson Sputnik Ratau says the department continues to implement bulk water projects in the province to ensure water security.

"The Minister, Senzo Mchunu, and the deputies, continues to work closely with water boards and municipalities to make sure that reticulation is something that is realised.

"He always emphasises that dams are full, but homes do not have water coming out of the taps, something we see clearly in KZN as most of the dams are near full capacity," said Ratau.

He adds that as temperatures increase, a decline in water levels is to be expected.

"During the early summer, before the rains come, we always see a slight decrease in water levels. We urge communities to use water sparingly during this time as the country is semi-arid and every drop counts," Ratau concluded.
