Water and Sanitation on Integrated Vaal River System

The Integrated Vaal River System continues with its impressive record

The Department of Water and Sanitation’s weekly dam report shows consistent improvement in the Integrated Vaal River System (IVRS) as it comfortably sits at 90.1% this week, increasing by 0.8% from 89.3% last week.

The IVRS consists of 14 dams which support 45% of the South Africa’s population and 60% of the country’s economy.

The Vaal dam is still boasting over 100% full this week with 106.8% compared to last week’s 106.7%, an impressive record compared to 103.9% that was recorded last year around this time.

Grootdraai dam is also sitting at a remarkable level this week, although the dam has shown a slight decrease to 101.6% from last week’s 102.2%. During the same period last year it was merely sitting at 96.3%.

Sterkfontein also continued with its impressive record with a slight increase this week. The dam level is 95.7% compared to 95.5% last week. Last year this time the figures were sitting at 89.8%.

The figures at Bloemhof show an increase from last week’s 94.2% to 100.5% this week. This is still regarded as a positive improvement; however, last year during this period the dam was 101.2% full.

Likewise, Katse and Mohale dams saw a slight increase from 67.1% and 36.1% to 67.7% and 36.8% this week respectively. During this period last year the dams were 50.1% and 64.2% full.

The department continues to urge water users to use water sparingly despite the good rains that we have seen in the recent past. The recent rain does not mean that the back of the drought has been broken and therefore everybody must continue using the resource wisely.
