Water service delivery to improve in Peddie
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), in partnership with Sunlight, yesterday handed over 5000 liter water tanks, 20 liter buckets, soaps and some promotional material to the residents of Eluxolweni Village in Ward 7 and Ebongweni B Village in Ward 3 in Ngqushwa as part of addressing the drought and promoting health and hygienein the area.
Amathole District Municipality is one of the municipalities that were declared drought disaster areas. Some water sources have dried up due to a lack of rain in the area. Both farming communities and domestic were also affected by the severe drought conditions. Yesterday’s handover was one of the many interventions to mitigate the impact of drought.
A hand-washing demonstration on the applied 6 steps when washing hands was presented to the communities. A total of 315 people from Eluxolweni Village and 1071 people from Ebongweni B Village will benefit from the donation by Sunlight. The Amathole District Municipality will fill-up the tanks when the water levels go down. The tanks are fitted with filters as well. Currently, Ebongweni Village does have water infrastructure but it’s experiencing operational challenges. Eluxolweni does not have infrastructure at all but it’s getting water from a neighboring village.
There are long-term plans with Amathole District Municipality as a Water Service Authority, for the next two years, to provide long-term water supply to these villages.
