The Department of Water and Sanitation in KwaZulu-Natal (DWS KZN) is strengthening its efforts to educate and empower young learners through the Department’s Water and Sanitation Education Programme (WSEP) and will be hosting the Public Speaking Competition on 03 September 2026 at CoGTA Mayville Offices in Durban.
The WSP is a school public-speaking programme targeting Grade 10 and 11 aimed at developing learners’ communication skills while promoting awareness about the importance of water and sanitation. The programme also encourages learners with strong academic accomplishments to pursue careers in the water and sanitation sector.
The programme provides learners with an opportunity to develop confidence, critical thinking and public-speaking skills, while engaging with issues affecting the country’s water resources and sanitation services.
Through the programme, learners are encouraged to become young water ambassadors who can share important messages on water conservation, responsible water use, protection of rivers and dams, and the importance of good sanitation practices within their schools, homes and communities.
Topics addressed through the public-speaking programme will include water scarcity, climate change and its impact on water resources, pollution of rivers, illegal dumping, water leaks, sanitation, protection of wetlands and the importance of maintaining clean and healthy communities.
The Department recognises schools as an important platform for shaping responsible citizens and believes that educating learners about water and sanitation from an early age can contribute towards building a water-wise generation.
