The latest state of reservoirs report issued by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) in Mpumalanga shows that dam levels continue to drop in the Gert Sibande District, from last week’s 82.6% to 81.8% in the current week.
All the dams in the Gert Sibande District recorded a decrease in water levels with Grootdraai dropping from 75.0% to 73.7%, Nooitgedacht from 78.9% to 78.1%, Vygeboom from 95.8% to
94.4%, Jericho from 73.1% to 71.8%, Westoe from 35.9% to 35.5%, Morgenstond from 71.5%
to 70.4% and Heyshope from 97.0% to 96.6%.
The report also shows a minimal drop in the provincial storage capacity from 84.0% to 83.3%. In terms of the Water Management Areas (WMA), the Olifants WMA dropped from 76.6% to 75.0% and the Inkomati-Usuthu WMA dropped from 85.9% to 85.7%.
The other two districts, Ehlanzeni and Nkangala, recorded mixed results with Ehlanzeni recording a slight improvement from 83.6% to 83.8% and Nkangala dropping from 86.7% to 85.4%.
The Department of Water and Sanitation calls on the public to use the available water wisely and sparingly as the water levels continue to drop in the Mpumalanga Province. DWS also reminds the public that South Africa is a water-scarce country, rated amongst the thirty driest countries in the world. This calls for intensified water conservation initiatives by all.
