Water and Sanitation on Clanwilliam Dam project

Clanwilliam Dam project’s PMO complete and ready to operate

Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane unveiled the Clanwilliam Project Management Office (PMO) for the Raising of the Clanwilliam Dam Wall project through an official event in Clanwilliam, Western Cape, on Saturday 11 July 2015.

The office will ensure that in the value chain of the execution of the project, local people are afforded a chance to play a meaningful role that will in turn create sustainable development through economic and social spin-offs.

The Minister added that another reason for the project to be situated in the area is to make sure that information about the raising of the dam wall is easily accessible by the residents who are beneficiaries of the project.

Minister Mokonyane said: “Once operational, the PMO will serve as the anchor room for both communication and project management of the dam”.

Everyone involved in the project will be stationed in the office and stay around the town, including artisans and other technical specialists. This will ensure that they are closer to the people and ensure smooth relations with the community.

Mokonyane concluded her official address by  saying that she hopes that the overall project more than anything else, empowers the local unemployed residents, entrepreneurs, emerging farmers and small businesses in the area through creation of jobs and other income earning opportunities.

“The recruitment of 360 needed local labourers will start soon and unemployed residents will be developed with work experience and other skills to equip them for further future employment, especially the youth”, she said.

The objective of raising the Clanwilliam dam wall which is on the Olifants River is to allow additional volumes of water to be accumulated  to meet the full supply requirements for existing users and to also strengthen it in line with dam safety requirements.
