Water and Sanitation on Baswa Le Meetse National competition

Amstelhof Primary School placed position first in Poster category during SAYWP

Sunaqie Matthews from Amstelhof Primary School in Paarl was placed position one in the Poster Category during this year’s Baswa Le Meetse National competition. The competition was held in Johannesburg during the Youth Water and Sanitation Summit from the 29th   of June till the 2nd of July.

The 7th annual youth summit was celebrated under the theme “Washing of hands, use and care of sanitation facilities for a healthy lifestyle, and Water Conservation”. The competition is aimed at recognising the role of learners in water awareness campaigns. Matthews’ messages on her poster caught the judges’ eyes winning her school a Computer Classroom

The summit is organised by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) as a culmination of the schools-based competitions administered by the department’s 2020 Vision for Water and Sanitation Education Programme (2020VfWSEP).

The competition promotes water conservation, health and hygiene; and stimulates the interest of youth in water related careers while promoting cultural diversity. This competition targets grades 4-6 learners who convey water conservation, health and hygiene messages through the arts medium under the following categories: Traditional music, Poetry, Drama, Poster and Praise singing. 

The other winners from Western Cape were: 

1. Injongo Primary school from Khayelitsha (3rd place in drama category)
2. Namhla Juqu from COSAT (Top Achiever-Female Category)
3. Siphosethu Xoki from Oaklands SSS (2nd position in Public Speaking)

Winning schools took away prizes such cash prizes, media classrooms, trophies and certificates.
