Water Affairs on vandalism of infrastructure in Madibeng Local Municipality

The Department of Water Affairs is pleased with the work of the police in the matter of the vandalism of water infrastructure in the Madibeng Local Municipality. Following the violent public protests earlier in the year in the area, where the issue of water supply and accessibility was sharply raised, Minister Edna Molewa stated during her visit to the locality that there was suspicion of vandalism of water infrastructure by people who were bent on sabotaging the work of government and in the same vein denying the community its right to access to the vital resource of water.

As indicated in the media dated Monday 19 May, a number of people have been arrested on suspicion of being involved in this evil act. One aspect that is even more problematic is that one of those arrested is a councillor in the area.

As more work is happening towards getting to the bottom of this issue Minister Molewa and the Department, ultimately government, are pleased that the root cause of some of the lack of services to communities, not due to a lack of effort or money from government, will come to light.
