Wage settlement with unions

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) and the two public sector unions, National, Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) and the Public Servants Association (PSA) this afternoon concluded a wage settlement agreement at the National Bargaining Forum (NBF).

Both unions accepted and signed a collective agreement that will implement a salary increase of between 9% and 11% on a sliding scale for the respective graded positions of SARS officials.

The wage increases will be applied retrospectively from 1 July 2009. SARS and both unions also agreed that a special task team will be appointed to make recommendations on two outstanding labour issues, career modelling and remuneration for "danger pay" that applies to certain groups of SARS officials.

In terms of the signed collective agreement, the task team must make recommendations to the NBF on or before 31 October 2009. These matters must be finalised with facilitation from the NBF on or before 31 December 2009.

SARS welcomes today's outcome of a wage settlement and remains committed to build constructive relationships with organised labour.
