The Department of Roads and Transport has set funds aside for the rehabilitation and building of roads infrastructure throughout the province. This to drive economic activity and ensure its faster recovery while expanding employment opportunities through infrastructure programmes. In pursuance of that the department is upgrading the Voortrekker Road (R55) between the N14 and Wierda Road in Sunderland Ridge, Johannesburg.
The department is tasked with the responsibility of designing, building and maintaining the provincial roads network. Hence most of its budget is channelled to the infrastructure programmes. These include improving the road network, new roads construction, road markings and general maintenance.
This, therefore, enables the department to occupy a strategic position in contributing to provincial government's efforts of growing the economy, creating space for small and medium contractors, creating a pool of skilled personnel and assisting in creating job opportunities .
