Volunteers for the Youth-build 2010 needed

A call goes out to National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) staff to join youth volunteers and the community of Ivory Park during the construction of the 76 houses in ward 78 and 79 in Ivory Park. Volunteers who are willing to participate can forward their names to Mpho Nche or Oupa Tshabalala and must indicate on which day they are available to volunteer.

Gauteng Department of Housing and Local Government in partnership with the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), national Department of Human Settlements, Youth-build International, City of Johannesburg, Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA) and National Homebuilders Registration Council (NHBRC) will officially launch the Youth-Build 2010 project aimed at building 76 houses in Ivory Park over a period of two weeks starting from 24 May to 3 June.

The Youth-Build Project, an initiative of the Department of Human Settlements is organised as part of the human settlements youth development programme aimed at mobilising volunteers to participate in accelerating housing delivery for approved beneficiaries. Through this project, unemployed youth gain valuable technical skills and use the acquired skills to do community service and make a difference in their communities, while opening up their chances of employment.

The initiative supports the governments housing 2030 vision aimed at enhancing the government focus on improving the condition of South African settlements.

This year will see participants build a total of 76 houses a figure symbolic to the annual commemoration of 16 June 1976 when the masses of young South African’s took to the streets in protects of barbaric laws of the apartheid regime including the use of Afrikaans as a language of instruction in township schools. The building will be taking place daily from 24 to 3 with the 23 marked for the launch and 4 as the official handover of the houses to the beneficiaries. The theme for the build is: Youth in human settlements. Proud to serve.

On 2 June, NYDA principals will also be on site building a house.
