Violence and firearms in particular have never been useful tools to settle domestic disputes and marital problems, North West Premier, Thandi Modise asserted in reaction to a report that a Koster Sergeant shot his wife seven times before turning the gun on himself and fatally wounding himself on Wednesday.
“The tragic incident which has left us in shock raises the question as to why the precaution step to disarm the Sergeant was not taken after his wife was granted a restraining court order,” Premier Modise emphasised.
In wishing the woman who is admitted in the intensive care unit at the Koster Provincial Hospital a speedy recovery, Modise added that unstable and or stressed police officials put their spouses, families and their colleagues at risk as pressure experienced tend to trigger violent reactions if psychological and counselling services are not offered.
It is alleged that the Sergeant’s wife was on her way to the local police Station to report a domestic violent case and violation of the terms of a protection order against her husband when the incident occurred.
According to the allegation, the suspect blocked the victim’s vehicle about 400 meters from the police station forcing her to stop in front of his car. The suspect got out of his car and went to the victim’s car to perform the ghastly act before shooting himself on his head.
Police Spokesperson Brigadier Thulane Ngubane confirmed that the Sergeant died at the scene and that two cases of attempted murder and an Inquest are under investigation.
