Vehicle overturns killing two and injuring three in R556 road accident in North West

Two people died and two others were critically injured while the driver sustained minor injuries after a vehicle overturned on the R 556 Bapong -Sun City road on Tuesday morning.

Theaccident occurred near Segwaelane villageat around 06h30 am. It is alleged the driver of the Renault sedan with five male occupants on lost control of the vehicle and it rolled several times and landed on the driver’s side facing the direction from which it came. Speeding is suspected to have caused the accident.

The occupants who were in their late 30’s were all miners who were from around Bapong on their way to work at Marikana Lonmin Mine.

Two passengers died on the spot while two others who were critically injured and the driver, a 40 year old Mozambiquean national were rushed to Brits Provincial Hospital.

Police are investigating cases of culpable homicide, reckless and or negligent driving.

In another near tragic road accident that occurred on the N4 Bakwena Platinum Highway between Groot Marico and Swartruggens, a 39 year old female driver, Yvonne Leketi and her 21 year old daughter survived a road accident with minor injuries after she lost control of her vehicle after it allegedly hit a pothole. Her vehicle, a Toyota Yaris rolled several times andher wrecked vehicle was blocked by a game farm fence. The pair was saved by seat belt they were wearing.

Acting MEC for the North West Department of Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Dr Magome Masike wishes to convey his condolences to the families of the road users who lost their loved ones in the accident and wish the injured road users a speedy recovery.
