The MEC for Community Safety, MEC Faith Nonhlanhla Mazibuko and the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum jointly condemn any action taken by community members, no matter what the cause, that results in the use of violence, damage to property and disruption and threat to all other law abiding citizens. We call upon all our community members to abide by the law and make use of legitimate channels to address any grievances that they may have.
The South African Police Services are also called upon to enforce the law without fear or favour and to take whatever measures necessary to protect the lives and property of all community members.
Whilst the MEC for Community Safety and the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum supports the democratic right of freedom of expression and free speech, community members are reminded that there are procedures to be followed to obtain permission for marches and gatherings and this certainly does not entitle anyone to behave violently or damage the property of others.
Community members are urged to conduct themselves lawfully or be met with the full might of the law.
