Unintended consequences of 24/7 rotation shifts for North West traffic to be monitored for swift intervention

The North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono assured Police Prisons and Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) on Sunday, that the implementation of the 24/7 rotation shifts for road traffic law enforcement will be closely monitored as from next month for swift intervention and resolution; to ensure that it bolsters crime prevention effort and reduces the carnage and combat lawlessness across roads in the province.

In her address to POPCRU North West’s 7th Provincial Congress in Orkney, MEC Mohono assured traffic officers that the consultation processes which began towards implementation of the rotation shifts will be continued and that unions and in particular POPCRU will be taken on board to resolve any disputes and unintended consequences which might arise.

Mohono indicated that she has instructed management to ensure that blue lights for patrol vehicles are procured to improve visibility on public roads, budget is sourced for more vehicles to be purchased, and vehicles are branded and that additional traffic officers are employed to add to reduce understaffing so that shifts are not strenuous to our members.

The MEC assured POPCRU delegates at the congress that that she had issued a directive to management in her portfolio to make things happen and work towards empowering and conducive environments.

She said that her department has come to realise that standard overtime would be unavoidable for a while and called for support us during implementation while her department lobbies for more funds from treasury in order to employ more traffic officers as part of contributing towards the national effortto create sustainable employment opportunities.

“We have in us the power and the revolutionary will to change anything and everything and will hold management accountable for their commitment to find creative ways to process applications for transfers received without compromising service delivery requirements,” she emphasised to a rolling applause.
