Under expenditure to be dealt with severely, says Deputy Speaker Bulelwa Tunyiswa

The Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature is resolute in achieving yet another clean audit in the 2012/13 financial year. The institution has since shown its eagerness to retain the clean audit award and as such it is firm in its oversight role. However, there is always a room for improvement and this was made clear by the Honourable Deputy Speaker Bulelwa Tunyiswa during the House Sitting in Bhisho on Tuesday when responding to questions from the Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs).

The Deputy Speaker acknowledged that whilst there are challenges there is a lot that the Legislature can report about in terms of its core business. Speaking before the House, Honourable Tunyiswa revealed achievements attained through Legislature committees citing that the institution recently took public hearings to greater heights when it conducted public hearings on Traditional Courts Bill. Honourable Tunyiswa further commented on the sterling work done by the women’s caucus and reported that all provinces are descending to the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature to learn on the operations of the women’s caucus.

The Deputy Speaker emphasised on the meaningful role played by various Legislature committees indicating that the Legislature shall accelerate training of support staff to provide related support to the Members of the Provincial Legislature. Honourable Tunyiswa said that the Legislature Executive Committee shall take the findings and recommendations of the Budget and Oversight Committee very seriously to improve on identified areas of concern.

Expressing her comments on the allocated budget the Honourable Deputy Speaker committed that the Legislature shall monitor spending patterns very closely. Management was warned to thread carefully as under expenditure shall be severely dealt with.
