Umgeni road office in KZN catches fire

The Department of Home Affairs' Umgeni Road office in KwaZulu-Natal caught fire today, Wednesday 28 March 2012.

At this stage the cause of the fire is unknown as police are still investigating.

According to preliminary reports, the fire broke out before 17h00 in the immigration section of the Umgeni Road office.

The smoke from the flames activated the sprinkler system and this together with the timeous intervention of the security officials using fire extinguishers helped to contain the fire from destroying files and other areas of the office.

As a consequence no files were destroyed nor were other areas of the office affected.

While the affected area remains under police cordon for investigation, the department can assure the public that other areas of the office remain open for service delivery.
