Two workers die and two injured when scaffold touched power line

Two Workers die and two injured when the scaffold they were working on touched the power lines when they tried to move the scaffold to the other side of the site in the premises of Inca Mansorary products at Mdantsane access road in Wilsonia yesterday.

An investigation was conducted by the Department of Labour Eastern Cape. A preliminary report of the investigation revealed that the workers, after finishing painting the Silo tank, decided to dismantle the scaffold and move it to the other side of the site. Two employees were pulling the scaffolding with the rope and four others pushing at the back. During this exercise the scaffold touched a live power line and the workers got electrocuted. Two workers lost their lives and two got injured and were admitted at Cecilia Makhiwane hospital.

“The loss of life of a worker on duty is unfortunate as you will find out that these workers are breadwinners of their households. The Department of Labour Eastern Cape will investigate further the company’s level of compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act” said Mr. Livingstone Matiwane, Head Inspection and Enforcement services in the Eastern Cape.

The incident is still under investigation by the Department of Labour Eastern Cape.
