Two senior government officials hand themselves over to the Organised Crime Unit

Two officials from the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport have handed themselves over to the Organised Crime Unit of the South African Police Service in the East Rand, through their legal representatives this morning. This follows a sting operation yesterday by the Department of Community Safety and law enforcement agencies led by the South African Police Service.

This comes after an investigation by the Department of Community Safety and law enforcement agencies over the last few months. The officials concerned are in senior positions in government and are alleged to have been forging letters for non-provincial government as well as non-municipal employees letters to enable entry to our provincial traffic training college. It is alleged these senior officials did this in exchange for sums of money.

Both MEC Mazibuko and MEC Vadi commended the initial investigation and are in full support of the process underway. “The integrity of our vehicle and driver testing stations, and their personnel, is crucial to ensuring vehicle and driver fitness as we seek to drastically decrease road accidents and fatalities in our province.” said MECs Mazibuko and Vadi.

The two officials will appear at the Johannesburg Magistrate Court (court 13) on the 5th September 2012.
