Two policemen arrested for corruption and defeating the ends of justice, Greenwood Park, KwaZulu-Natal

The Independent Complaints Directorate in KwaZulu-Natal has arrested two policemen for corruption and defeating the ends of justice on 21 June 2011. It is alleged that the policemen, a 39 year-old Warrant Officer and a 37 year-old Constable, attached to the Durban Dog Unit, solicited a bribe from a taxi owner to ensure that a case of possession of unlicensed firearms against the taxi owner does not go anywhere. They promised that if the taxi owner paid the policemen the R15 000 bribe, the policemen would not testify against him.

The taxi owner approached the ICD to lodge a complaint. An entrapment operation was set up. The policemen were persuaded to accept R5 000 on the understanding that the balance would be paid later. When the policemen came to collect the money, they were arrested by ICD investigators in Greenwood Park, Durban North. The marked money was recovered.

The policemen are expected to appear at the Durban Magistrates Court on 22 June 2011 on charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice.
